Our latest research “Effect of Water Salinity on Germination of Different Crops in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions: Assessing Seed Tolerance to Irrigation Salinity” by Mohamed Abd El-Hady, Hani Abdelghani Mansour, and Giovanni Esposito has been published!
Water salinity is one of the most limiting factors for crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluates how different salinity levels in irrigation water affect the germination performance of major crops (i.e. tomato, squash, wheat, and barley) during their early growth stages. By analysing salinity indices (EC, SAR, RSC, SSP, PS) and germination parameters (CVG, GRI, MGT), the research provides a quantitative framework for assessing seed tolerance to saline irrigation.
As salinization increasingly threatens soil and water resources in Mediterranean and arid regions, this work supports the development of evidence-based irrigation management. The findings contribute to PRIMA’s objectives in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing crop resilience to water quality stress.
