Our latest research “Valorisation of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) residues and cheese whey into volatile fatty acids for single cell protein production” by Carlo Moscariello, Silvio Matassa, Francesco Pirozzi, Giovanni Esposito, and Stefano Papirio has been published!
This research, conducted within the PRIMA project, explores an innovative biological route to valorise agri-food residues, specifically industrial hemp residues (HBRs) and cheese whey (CW), into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and single cell protein (SCP). The work presents a fully biological conversion process, avoiding chemical pretreatments and demonstrating an integrated anaerobic–aerobic system that supports the circular bioeconomy transition.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of converting agricultural and dairy by-products into high-value microbial protein, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional protein sources. By integrating waste valorisation and biotechnological innovation, it supports the goals of the PRIMA programme toward a resource-efficient and resilient Mediterranean bioeconomy.
