Our latest research “One-stage single cell protein production from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) biomass residues and cheese whey through sequential anaerobic–aerobic fermentation” by Carlo Moscariello, Silvio Matassa, Armando Oliva, Piet N.L. Lens, Francesco Pirozzi, Giovanni Esposito, and Stefano Papirio has been published!
Within the PRIMA project framework, this research proposes a novel one-stage bioprocess for converting industrial hemp residues (HBRs) and cheese whey (CW) into single cell protein (SCP), offering a sustainable pathway to recover nutrients and produce alternative protein sources. The study integrates sequential anaerobic–aerobic fermentation in a single system, where volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generated anaerobically are immediately used as carbon sources for microbial protein production.

This work demonstrates the technical and economic feasibility of transforming agro-industrial by-products into high-quality microbial protein using a fully biological, integrated process. Such innovations advance circular bioeconomy strategies and contribute to sustainable food and feed production, thus aligning with PRIMA’s mission to foster resource-efficient solutions in the Mediterranean region.
